NYX Jumbo Eye pencils in Milk and Cottage cheese

Dairy products never sounded more delicious! NYX Milk jumbo eyepencil has a fervent admiration bordering on madness all thought the beauty blogosphere, so I just NEEDED to get one of my own, and you know what, millions of people are RIGHT. It is a very soft, matte, easily blendable base for your eyeshadows and if you apply it moderately, it will not crease (provided that you use an eyeshadow base). Do believe the hype in this case, it can be yours for 3,59 EUR at Boozyshop. As for Cottage cheese, I have had it for a while, did not like it at first, but then I learned to to work it well into the eye lid and it does work wonders with metallic eyeshadows. However, this will crease also with a base, so I am not that crazy about it. Nothing wrong with MILK, though! :-)

Eyeshadow bases review

Here is an overview of my eyeshadow bases (struggeling with a plural here!). First I bought HEMA eyeshadow base (11ml, 3,95ml), next was NYX eyeshadow base (from Boozyshop, 6,99 EUR, 7g, in skin), then I got Urban Decay Primer Potion 3,7 ml, included in my NAKED palette, and finally, there is 1.45 g eyeshadow base included in NYC Individual eyes 939 Bryant Park palette.

This is probably not going to be any surprise if I say that the best primer is the Urban Decay Primer Potion, followed by HEMA eyeshadow base and then there are NYX and NYC, but you can pretty much put them together in the third place. I have to stress though, that there is a huge gap in quality between the second and third place :-).

Primer Potion has a light consistency, it dries invisible into your eyelid and it makes the eyeshadow last all day long. HEMA eyeshadow base has a creamy white colour and it does not blend that well into the eyelid, but your eyeshadow will not move one milimeter, that is guaranteed. NYX eyeshadow base has a very disappointing performance, it starts to melt about 4 hours after you put your make up on and NYC has about the same longevity. They are both of skin colour and have a light creamy consistency.
From left: violet eyeshadow from NYC palette, HEMA, NYX, Urban Decay, NYC.

I swatched all bases: first is an eyeshadow on its down (left), then HEMA, NYX, Urban Decay, NYC. Top row is a base on its own and bottom with the eyeshadow. Now it is also perfectly visibly why it pays off to wear an eyeshadow base, the eyeshadow colour just pops out!

White pencils as a base - review

White pencils are a must for any makeup enthusiast. They are popular as an eyeshadow base (making the true colour of pigments really pop). Moreover, if you apply them on the waterline, your eyes will appear larger. White eyepencils are also frequently placed in the inner corner of the eye and under the brow bone, again to make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

  1. I bought NYX jumbo eyepencil in cottage cheese via an Internet shop (Boozyshop). It has a metallic sheen and it is creamy. I was very disappointed about how much it creased, even with a base on.
  2. Almay double-end pencil - the texture is similar as with NYX and I am equally unimpressed with how much it smudges when used under an eyeshadow.
  3. 2B Cosmetic jumbo eyepencil - less creamy but again a weak performer as a base. All three are perfect for the tear duct and on the brow bone.
  4. Berange Paris - bought in Cora, a very cheap pencil, I bought it originally just for my waterline. I tried it as a base as well, and it is simply stunning, the colour payoff is strong with no sheen and it did not budge at all. I recommend buying this one, as the price/quality ratio is unbeatable.
Here are swatches (same order as above):
I chose the reddest colour in Metal Mania palette and tried it first without a base (very bottom) and then over individual swatches.

Heureka!

Having watched a ton of YouTube makeup tutorials, I was craving one particular eye pencil - NYX Jumbo Eyepencil in MILK. It is a perfect base for eyeshadows (it gives them something to grab to) as it brings out the true pigments. Just watch this:

Understandably, I tried to order it online, but they are always out of stock for this particular colour (at least every time I checked on Boozyshop). As it turns out (I love google!), there is another Dutch based shop that has NYX and plenty of other interesting brandS on offer: www.beautybyelke.be. Quickly go and check it out, it is perfect! And do not be put off by Dutch, I am sure Elke speaks English perfectly! :-)

Alice in Wonderland - online shopping

I admit that one of my guilty pleasures is watching makeup videos on YouTube (Tiffany D, Panacea81, Michelle Phan, EmilyNoel83). Watching them makes me want to scrub my face clean and apply new style of makeup (smokey eyes! cat eyes! graphic eyes!) about 5 times a day!

I became curious about certain brands that I thought only existed in Wonderland (a.k.a. U.S.A.) - NYX, Sonia Kashuk, NYC Cosmetics, ELF, Sigma, Wet n Wild, Covergirl (surprisingly available at your local Delhaize), Sleek-makeup, Seche vite, China glaze, Essie… ).

It did not take me long before I found a website specialized in most of these brands and that delivered to Belgium quickly. They are based in the Netherlands and reply to your e-mails within 24 hours - http://www.boozyshop.nl/. I have already received my very first NYX Jumbo pencil (milk was sold out, so I got the one in cottage cheese), NYX skin eyeshadow base and my first Metal Mania Palette :-). LOVE!
